What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a treatment technique in which people are trained to improve their health by using signals from their own bodies. At the Scottsdale Neurofeedback Institute in Arizona we use biofeedback successively on a daily basis to help a wide variety of problems. Whether it be helping individuals with anxiety be able to relax, a stroke victim regain use of a previously dysfunctional brain area, or offer pain victims some much needed relief.

The various biofeedback tools we have act to enable you to monitor the activity inside your body.

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) Training

One intervention we frequently use is Heart Rate Variability (HRV) training which measures the variability of your heartbeat. The equipment is able to give feedback on the variability of your heart beat and in turn teach you over time to breath in a more coherent and consistent manner. Breathing in a more relaxed and consistent manner promotes calmness.

Thermal Biofeedback

When individuals are anxious it causes the temperature in their fingers to drop. Thermal biofeedback can be used as an indicator of anxiety levels while individuals try different techniques to relax. We have had good success with thermal biofeedback and client presenting with anxiety.

Galvanic Skin Response

Again using anxiety as an example. When one is anxious it can create clammy, damper skin than normal. With GSR individuals can learn to relate this clamminess to emotions by using the feedback being presented to them, and it turn learn to control it.
